This Saturday, October 13, we have another exclusive: the legendary Kevin Ruiz plays a 4 hour set. Be prepared to party! Be prepared to be blown away (again). Opening set by James Bald 008.

Rewired: Where we satisfy the most discerning of clubbers.

Kevin Ruiz is one of the country’s legendary DJs and is still one of the most highly rated. In the late nineties to 2003, he was resident of ABGs and then of seveneightorange, two clubs that were a big part of the house music revolution in Manila. His six-hour sets at seveneightorange made him famous. He is one of the very few in the local scene who can take you on a journey. Born and raised in New York City, he has kept the NYC influence in his music. Kevin’s music is very up to date as he is sent the latest tracks from DJs and producers around the world. He is also one of the few house DJs who can scratch and use proper effects in his DJ sets. He has played alongside numerous big name DJs/Artists such as Chicane, Deep Dish and recently, Café Mambo Ibiza resident Pete Gooding.

This Saturday, Sept 22, Rewired Warehouse 135 brings you another exclusive: Kevin Ruiz vs. Funk Avy. Two of the countries finest DJs go head to head in what looks like to be the DJing equivalent of a Manny Pacquiao fight. Opening set by another veteran, Travis Monsod.

Prepare for another night of party mayhem. Manila, you now have a choice for a real clubbing night.

In case you didn’t know, Kevin Ruiz is one of the country’s legendary DJs. Funk Avy is currently Manila’s hottest DJ (We stand by this proclamation). We will say this again; he is probably the first local DJ with a recording contract with an international label, Fusion Recordings of France. More on Funk Avy: http://rewiredmnl.multiply.com/journal/item/9/Funk_Avy.

I remember very well one early morning. I think it was 1992, James McCranie was on the decks after another moving prime time set by Elmer Dado. James was playing a set of unknown records. Nothing was familiar to me or to anyone else in the club. It was acid house and he was driving it hard record after record. Despite not knowing any track, it was a very moving set, and it made me and my friends dance like crazy on the floor. It was then I discovered the power and the artistry of the DJ. Instead of playing the anthems, James was using records as building blocks to build and create a vibe and energy that made people dance. That moment and many moments help shape clubbing in this country.

I couldn't see myself in any other club at that time. The music was impecabble and up to date. It was the time when acid house and techno were taking over dancefloors all over the world and Mars made sure they didn't get left out. They didn't rely on the popular hits but instead made their own anthems: Prodigy's "Out of Space" (They were playing Prodigy before anyone of you heard of them), Smart E's "Sesame's Treet, Lil Louis "French Kiss" and Jaydee's "Plastic Dreams" (played first in Mars but bastardized everywhere else).

Now I just gave away my age. See you all this Saturday.

I read a post recently that some people are getting bored with the same old music. Well, that is the reason Rewired was born and continues to exist. We too are tired of the same old commercial crap we hear over and over again. DJs are supposed to be artists, not jukeboxes. Well peeps, you finally have a choice.

This Saturday is going to be legendary and i'm not just saying that for hard sell's sake. Rubber Inc is a pioneer in the electronica scene in this country. They even met the mayor of Cologne (ironic that they are not appreciated as they should be in their own country). The Teichmann Brothers is an established name in the Berlin scene. Funk Avy is probably the hottest DJ in the city right now.

The choice is yours. If you miss it...well... If you don't, you can tell your children about it someday.

See you all this Saturday. Free entrance before midnight with a welcome drink!

DJ Rap or Charissa Saverio as she is known to her friends, is a DJ from Walthamstow, E17 (although she insists that she does not know East 17 the group).

She is known as DJ Rap because of the breakbeats she original played, her love of Hip-Hop and the fact that the promoters would not know that she was female. She first got into Hip-Hop because she liked the rhythms, she then moved to hardcore because "The rhythms got faster".

Before she was a DJ she used to "Rave". She says she doesn't believe in going to work. She was a trainee Articled Clerk but she prefered raving so she jacked her job in. (Ok for some init!!!)

She has released two proper album: 'Learning Curve' and 'Up All Night'.

Her favorite drink is K and MD 20/20 (although probably in separate glasses). She also regards the Akai S1000 as the best thing ever invented and enjoys smoking a great big spliff.

Her gig is something to look forward to. House, breakbeats, drum & bass. Finally! Also featuring, one of Manila's finest, Lady Trinity ( http://rewiredmnl.multiply.com/journal/item/1 )

It was another crazy night at Warehouse 135 as you can see from the photos. DJs Travis Monsod, Mulan and Houseboy kept the vibe up til the morning, and oh, we were blessed to have a surprise set from one of the country's finest, the veteran Erwin Edralin. Great crowd and it was nostalgic to see the familiar faces from the ABGs and Kemistry days. It was also encouraging to see new young faces grooving to the new sound of the underground. Who said Manila can't dance to techno and electro? Til the next party...lets keep on rewiring.

Jackin' Electric Beats; from Electro to Techno to Breakbeats and everything else the other clubs are too scared to play.

The Lineup
Travis Monsod
started his DJ career around the year 2000, as the resident of Twilo, Libis alongside Mulan. He then went on to become the resident for BED, introducing his audience to Electro which they can’t get enough of it ever since. Travis is also a producer contributing to the two LOCAL://e! compilations and remixing “The Day You Said Goodnight” by Hale with Brian Cua.

Mulan
is a hybrid – a creature of eclectic styles and tastes. He sharpened his skills playing drum & bass in his own club Twilo in Libis around 2000. He then was a regular at the legendary Kemistry at Malate embracing the underground vibe the club was well known for. Around 2005 to 2006, he was a regular guest DJ at Park 97 in Shanghai, China. From funk and soul to techno, electro and drum and bass, Mulan does in all with impeccable skill and sublime flow.

Houseboy
aka Dondon Renato, is the first Filipino artist to represent the country on an Asian Collective CD compilation released by a major record label. He has been DJing since 1988 and has always been at the forefront of the underground dance music scene opening clubs such as the Verve Room and Kemistry. The good old days are back? Having been a clubber since I heard acid house at Mars in the early 90's, I've been there and done that. My interest in electronic music and clubbing never waned until around two years ago where I just got bored with the music I was hearing when I go out. Nobody was taking any risks. It was the same old music night in and night out. Despite its popularity abroad, most clubs refused to play minimal techno and electro. I was even told that Manila wasn't ready for new music. Well, they were (and still are) dead wrong!

Last night at Warehouse 135 was a special night. The vibe was extremely wonderful and it did remind of the good old days. What or who was creating that vibe? The music from Local e's Funky Avy and Silverfilter. These two guys have elevated and evolved the concept of the dj. Not just playing music, they are creating music on the spot. The DJ as a musician, that was exactly happening that night. Funk Avy being a veteran DJ, he knew very well how to interact with his audience creating tension and releasing it at the very right moment. Like a live jazz band doing improvisation, Silverfilter would create and make new rhythms, new basslines and even some effected vocals. The packed dancefloor was just loving it. What genre of music were they playing? Techno and electro and a little minimal techno!

What does this all mean? Its getting better... The dance industry has never seen better days since we heard the words 'ABGs' and 'Consortium'. Finally, we have a club (again) that is taking risks and has a firm belief in the power of a DJ (and/or producer). To think about it further, it wasn't really about taking risks, it was just letting progression and evolution in clubbing take its natural course.

The next time you see a post for an event in multiply with the names Funk Avy, Silverfilter or Local://e! Please do check it out, you will want to tell your children about it someday.

Check out Lady Trinity's mix at http://ladytrinity.multiply.com/music/item/3. This is one of the best mixes I've heard from any local DJ in a long time. Fantastic buildup and smooth as silk mixing with an original sound. Shanghai's Bar Rouge was in town and what better place to have it than in Warehouse 135? Thanks to Stolichnaya and Domini of Driven for giving us the oppurtunity to help Manila's club scene. It was a night to remember... though I really can't remember.

At one point the party felt like the good old days. DJ Philippe pumping the crowd with underground house, nicely set up by our very own James Bald 008. It was pure unadultarated clubbing! As I said, if you missed it, it was really your loss.

Cheers to more stoli!
